**Patrick Mahomes Fined by NFL for Celebratory Gesture**
The National Football League (NFL) has intensified its strictness regarding celebrations that resemble gun gestures, but it seems Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was not aware of the new regulations. Recently, Mahomes was fined over $14,000 by the league for using his arms in a touchdown celebration that the NFL has termed a "violent gesture."
This specific fine is part of a broader crackdown by the NFL, targeting players who use such gestures, even during seemingly harmless celebrations on first downs. The NFL's increased vigilance began last month due to growing concerns about the prevalence of "gun-related" celebrations. Consequently, the league has implemented more severe penalties.
According to data from Spotrac, this season has seen the NFL issue 17 fines for "obscene gestures." This marks a significant increase as there were no such fines last year. "The rule has been in the books for years, and it hasn't really surfaced... We hadn't really noticed it that much until this year," a league executive commented to CBS Sports, highlighting the sudden rise in such incidents. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell emphasized the league's stance by stating, "We don't think it's appropriate.... It sends the wrong message."
This is not Mahomes' first encounter with NFL fines. He was previously fined $50,000 last year for "verbally abusing" an official. Adding to his current woes, the fine comes right on the heels of a disappointing first loss of the season for the Chiefs, following an impressive nine-game winning streak.
