In a shocking incident of road rage, a New York City police officer has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting another motorist in New Jersey and fleeing the scene. The accused officer, identified as Hieu Tran, is also facing charges of weapons possession and aggravated assault, according to prosecutors.

The incident took place on May 17 around 11 p.m. near the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road. Responding to a multivehicle crash, police officers from Voorhees Township discovered that the driver of a yellow truck involved in the collision had been shot, as stated in court records. Surveillance footage revealed that a white SUV arrived at the scene, and the truck came alongside it while waiting at a traffic light. Moments later, the truck accelerated through a red light, causing a collision with other vehicles, with the SUV following suit and then fleeing, according to the affidavit.

Investigations also revealed that the driver of the SUV used a credit card belonging to Tran to purchase gas at a nearby location. Detectives further connected Tran to the incident through phone records and ballistic evidence that linked three 9 mm casings found at the scene to his service weapon.

On Thursday, Tran was apprehended at the New York Police Department and is set to be extradited to New Jersey. He appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Friday for an extradition hearing.

The victim, a 30-year-old resident of Voorhees Township, was critically injured and immediately taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. As of the latest update, he remains in critical condition.

Tran, 27, joined the Police Department in February 2021 and had been assigned to the public information office since 2023. Prior to that, he served at the 28th Precinct in Harlem. Following his arrest, Tran has been suspended without pay.

The gravity of these charges against a law enforcement officer has raised concerns among the public. Authorities are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served in this case.
