In a disturbing turn of events, a Nevada man has been apprehended for making violent threats against various government officials involved in the criminal hush money trial of former President Donald Trump. According to an unsealed indictment in Las Vegas, Spencer Gear, 32, allegedly targeted both the judge presiding over the case and the prosecutor who brought it.
Gear reportedly made threatening phone calls and sent menacing emails to eight federal officials and three state employees. The indictment reveals that he explicitly threatened to assault and even murder them. The officials were identified by their initials in the charges.
One of the recorded phone calls implicated Gear in issuing a death threat against Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan District Attorney, and Judge Juan Merchan. The motive behind these threats is yet to be determined.
During his arraignment, Gear pleaded not guilty to all 22 counts mentioned in the indictment, which include charges of threatening a federal official and transmitting threatening messages.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland expressed his concern over the incident, stating, "The citizens we rely on to serve the public must be able to do their jobs without fearing for their lives. The Justice Department has no tolerance for acts and threats of violence targeting public servants, and we will stop at nothing to find and bring to justice those responsible."
Following his arrest, Gear was remanded into custody, and his trial is scheduled to commence on September 24. If convicted on all charges, he could potentially face decades behind bars.
Robert Wells, the executive assistant director of the FBI National Security Branch, emphasized the gravity of such threats to government officials. He affirmed that the FBI would not tolerate individuals who aim to intimidate or harm public servants in the execution of their duties: "As this case demonstrates, we will work with our partners to investigate and hold accountable all those who threaten or interfere with government officials as they carry out their duties."
The authorities involved in this case are determined to ensure the safety and security of those in public service, as they fulfill their crucial responsibilities on behalf of the people. Threats and acts of violence will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be brought to justice to uphold the integrity of our justice system.
