Nebraska Claims Fifth Conference Championship with 2-1 Win Over Penn State
In a thrilling match on Sunday morning at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Gabe Swansen's game-winning RBI double in the ninth inning propelled Nebraska to a 2-1 victory over Penn State, securing the team's fifth conference championship in program history. The game was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd of 13,300 fans.
Nebraska, with a record of 39-20, managed to score two runs on six hits, accompanied by an error, while Penn State (29-24) tallied a single run on four hits, with one error. Swansen played a crucial role in the victory, finishing the game 2-for-4 with his pivotal RBI double, marking his fourth multi-hit performance in the Big Ten Tournament.
Josh Caron, on the other hand, continued his outstanding tournament run by hitting a home run for the third consecutive game. His performance helped him surpass Purdue's Dan Black's record of five home runs in a single Big Ten Tournament, as Caron now leads the tournament with six. Additionally, his 28 total bases set a new tournament record, surpassing the previous record of 26 set by Ohio State's Steve Caravati in 2005.
Nebraska's success was not solely attributed to its offense, as Jackson Brockett delivered a stellar performance on the mound. The left-handed pitcher tossed eight impressive innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits. He struck out five batters and walked only one, improving his record to 3-2 for the Huskers.
In the opening frame, Penn State took the initial lead after loading the bases with a walk and two singles. An errant throw on a pickoff attempt at second base resulted in the Nittany Lions scoring the first run of the game. However, Nebraska's resolute defense prevented any further scoring from Penn State.
Throughout the match, both teams endured periods of offensive struggles. Nebraska's offense faced a challenging fourth inning, with their threat being extinguished by a shallow pop-up and a double play on a popped up bunt attempt.
Brockett showcased his dominance by retiring 12 consecutive batters, setting a streak that came to an end with a one-out double from Penn State's Adam Cecere. However, Brockett quickly regained control of the situation, recording two straight outs and stranding the runner in scoring position.
Caron provided the much-needed spark for Nebraska in the seventh inning with a powerful 403-foot home run, evening the score at 1-1. This marked his sixth home run of the tournament, surpassing his competitors and solidifying his position as the tournament's leading home run hitter.
The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the ninth inning when Nebraska seized the opportunity to clinch the victory. With two outs, a single up the middle from Columbus allowed pinch runner Brumbaugh to steal second base and position himself in scoring range. Swansen then came through with a clutch RBI double into the left-center gap, scoring Brumbaugh and giving the Huskers their first lead of the game.
Brett Sears entered the game in the ninth inning, securing the win and recording his first career save, as he retired the Nittany Lions in order. Sears' strong relief appearance capped off a remarkable tournament for Nebraska.
With this victory, Nebraska secures an automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship. The NCAA Baseball Championship Selection Show is scheduled to air on Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
The conference championship win holds immense significance for Nebraska as it marks their first-ever Big Ten Tournament title. Previously, the Huskers had been runners-up in 2013, 2014, and 2019. The triumph also adds to Nebraska's successful history, as the team had claimed tournament championships in the Big 12 conference in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005.
Nebraska's stellar performance throughout the tournament set various records. The team set a new Big Ten Tournament record with 17 doubles in six games, surpassing the previous records held by Michigan and Indiana. Additionally, the pitching staff recorded an impressive 56 strikeouts, setting a new record for the most punchouts by a team in the Big Ten Tournament.
The Huskers will now eagerly await the announcement of their placement in the NCAA Baseball Championship, with hopes of carrying their conference championship momentum forward and making a deep postseason run.
