**NC State Quarterback Grayson McCall Suffers Serious Injury Against Wake Forest**
NC State's quarterback Grayson McCall was taken off the field via cart in the first quarter during a game against Wake Forest. This came after McCall sustained a significant hit while trying to scramble on a third-down play. Medical staff attended to McCall on the field for several minutes. Despite the injury, McCall was able to move his arms and share a moment with his parents before being carted off.
McCall's history with serious injuries is notable. In 2023, while playing for Coastal Carolina, he experienced a similar incident that led to a concussion and ended his season prematurely. This injury made McCall reconsider his commitment to football, but he ultimately decided to use his final season of eligibility with NC State.
Before Saturday's game, McCall had played in three games for NC State, completing 66.7% of his passes for 476 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. Unfortunately, injuries had already caused him to miss the previous two games of the season. In his stead, freshman quarterback CJ Bailey took over, starting in both a loss against Clemson and a win over Northern Illinois.
McCall's college career has been impressive. During his tenure at Coastal Carolina, he accumulated over 10,000 passing yards and 88 touchdown passes. His performance earned him the Sun Belt Player of the Year award three times, in 2020, 2021, and 2022, under coach Jamey Chadwell's guidance.
In McCall's previous absence, true freshman CJ Bailey stepped up. He has completed 42 of 65 pass attempts for 469 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions this season. As the season progresses, NC State will look to Bailey to step into the starting role once again.
