### Hoda Kotb Announces Departure From NBC's 'Today' Amid Pay Cut Request
Hoda Kotb stunned viewers this week with the unexpected news that she will be stepping down as anchor of NBC's "Today" show. According to a report from Puck News, part of the reason behind Kotb’s departure is the network's request for her to accept a salary reduction. Puck revealed that Kotb's impressive annual salary of over $20 million was no longer feasible for the network amid the shifting broadcast environment and steep ratings decline affecting flagship morning shows such as "Today" and "Good Morning America."
NBC executives expressed their admiration for Kotb and acknowledged her significant contributions to the brand. However, they conveyed to her agents that the days of exceptionally high contracts are over due to the industry's continuing downturn, as reported by Puck.
During Thursday's episode of "Today," Kotb announced that she will be transitioning into a yet-to-be-specified role at NBC early in 2025. She told the audience that she made her decision in August, recognizing it was time for a change as she approached her 60th year.
In an emotional memo to her colleagues, which she also shared on-air, Kotb wrote, "My heart is all over the map. I know I'm making the right decision, but it's a painful one. And you all are the reason why. They say two things can be right at the same time, and I'm feeling that so deeply right now. I love you and it's time for me to leave the show."
Kotb has had a storied career at NBC, spending 26 years at the network. She worked 10 years with "Dateline," seven years on the 7 a.m. hour of "Today," and 16 years on the 10 a.m. hour. She helped establish the fourth hour of "Today" alongside Kathie Lee Gifford and later Jenna Bush Hager.
As Kotb moves on from her current role, her fans and colleagues alike are left reflecting on her impactful journey and eagerly anticipating her next steps within NBC.
