The NBA is launching an investigation following an altercation involving Strahinja Jokić, the brother of Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokić, after the Nuggets' thrilling 101-99 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. According to The Athletic, Strahinja Jokić was seen punching a fan in the head, prompting further scrutiny into the incident.
The incident occurred shortly after Jamal Murray's sensational buzzer-beater secured the Nuggets' victory in Game 2 of their opening-round playoff series. Strahinja and his brother Nemanja Jokić were observed confronting two individuals in the stands at Ball Arena in Denver. It remains unclear what led to the altercation or what exchange transpired, but Strahinja threw a punch that struck the fan.
In addition to the NBA's investigation, the Denver Police are also looking into the incident, although no formal police report has been filed at this time. This is not the first instance involving Jokić's brothers, as they made headlines earlier this year when they took to social media to address the suspension of Nikola Jokić for forcefully pushing Miami Heat forward Markieff Morris. Strahinja and Nemanja have often been seen courtside during Nuggets games and actively participate in the action on and off the court, including a confrontation with Phoenix Suns players during a 2021 game.
Strahinja's involvement in altercations is not new, as he was previously arrested in 2019 for allegedly choking and pushing a woman during a domestic dispute. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor count and felony trespassing, with the remaining charges being dismissed.
The NBA's response to the altercation on Monday night remains unclear, and it remains to be seen if any punishment will be handed down. The league has the option of banning the Jokić brothers from attending games for a specific period if deemed necessary.
Despite the incident, Nikola Jokić had an outstanding performance in Monday's game, achieving a triple-double with 27 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists. This marked his fourth playoff game with at least 25 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists, a feat accomplished by only three other players in NBA history.
As the investigation unfolds, the NBA will evaluate the circumstances surrounding the altercation involving Strahinja Jokić and the fan, aiming to determine the appropriate actions and potential consequences.
