In a press conference held at NATO headquarters in Brussels, General Christopher Cavoli, NATO's supreme allied commander Europe, expressed confidence in Ukrainian forces holding their lines in the region around Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine. He dismissed the notion that Russia's military has deployed enough troops to achieve a strategic breakthrough in the area.

Addressing military chiefs from across the transatlantic alliance, General Cavoli stated that Russia lacks both the necessary numbers and the skill and capability to execute a large-scale strategic offensive. Although the Russian forces have made local advances, they have also experienced local losses, he added. However, General Cavoli did not provide any specific figures regarding Russia's troop deployment in the region.

During the conference, Admiral Rob Bauer, the chair of NATO's military committee, acknowledged the significant ammunition shortage faced by Ukrainian forces. He expressed optimism about "serious improvements" in the amount of ammunition that Ukraine would soon receive. Ukrainian troops have faced a disproportionate level of shelling from Russian forces, sometimes at a ratio of 10 to one, as confirmed by officials.

The ammunition shortage has been partly attributed to a delay in securing a major military aid package for Ukraine from the U.S. Congress. However, General Cavoli assured that Ukraine's allies were now actively shipping "vast amounts" of ammunition, short-range air defence systems, and "significant amounts" of armored vehicles to support the fight against the Kharkiv advance.

General Cavoli emphasized his close contact with Ukrainian colleagues, expressing confidence that they would effectively hold the line against Russian aggression. The NATO commander's assurance comes as a source of optimism for Ukraine's forces as they make efforts to defend their territory in the Kharkiv region.

The situation in northeastern Ukraine remains tense as Russia continues its incursions into the region. The international community closely observes the ongoing conflict, as the region's stability and the resolution of the conflict remain key concerns for global security.
