In a tragic incident last week, a semi-truck driver, identified as Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza, has been accused of causing a fatal crash on a highway in Colorado. The crash resulted in the death of one person and the serious injury of another. Authorities have revealed that Cruz-Mendoza is an illegal immigrant from Mexico and has a long history of removal from the United States.

The accident occurred on June 11 when Cruz-Mendoza lost control of the semi-truck while transporting a load of steep pipe on Hwy 285 near Conifer. The vehicle rolled onto its side and veered off the road, spilling its cargo of pipe and angle iron onto five other vehicles. Sadly, one person lost their life in the crash, while another sustained severe injuries.

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to the scene, and investigations revealed that Cruz-Mendoza has been charged with reckless driving and homicide-related charges in connection with the incident. Remarkably, Cruz-Mendoza was not injured in the crash.

The wreckage caused a major disruption, forcing the closure of the highway in both directions for more than 12 hours. Authorities worked diligently to clear the roadway and restore normalcy for commuters.

Following his arrest, Cruz-Mendoza was booked into the Jefferson County Jail. Colorado State Patrol confirmed that he does not have a local address. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson affirmed that Cruz-Mendoza has a history of multiple deportations to Mexico, dating back over two decades.

According to ICE, Cruz-Mendoza first came to their attention in April 2002 when he was arrested on local charges in Jefferson County, Oregon. As a result, an immigration judge ordered his removal to Mexico on May 29, 2002. Since then, Cruz-Mendoza has been removed from the U.S. or voluntarily returned to Mexico a staggering 16 times.

ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Denver has closely reviewed Cruz-Mendoza's recent arrest and has lodged a detainer. This detainer ensures that ICE will be notified if Cruz-Mendoza is due to be released from custody, allowing them to take appropriate action.

As of now, court records indicate that Cruz-Mendoza remains in custody, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for July 30.

The tragic collision highlights the ongoing debate regarding illegal immigration and its impact on public safety. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for effective immigration enforcement and border security measures.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, with a commitment to bringing justice to the victims and their families.

The case of Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza underscores the complexities of the immigration system and the challenges faced in ensuring the safety of all road users.
