In response to the recent strike on its consulate in Damascus, Iran has issued threats against Israel, leading several countries to caution their citizens against traveling to the region. Nations including France, India, Russia, Poland, and the United Kingdom have issued travel advisories, citing the potential for an Iranian attack. This has raised concerns about escalating violence in the Middle East.
On Friday, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs urged its citizens to avoid travel to Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. The statement, posted on social media platform X, also announced the recall of relatives of diplomats based in Iran and a ban on French civil servants from conducting missions in the mentioned countries and territories.
Similarly, the United Kingdom advised its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Israel and Palestine, pointing to the possibility of an Iranian attack on Israeli territory. The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office expanded the warning, advising against all travel to northern Israel, the Gaza Strip, and areas near Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Notably, occupied East Jerusalem and Route 1 between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv were exempted from the travel advisory.
Russia has also strongly recommended that its citizens refrain from traveling to the region, emphasizing security risks in Israel, Lebanon, and Palestine. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the unstable situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone and the area along the "Blue Line" between Lebanon and Israel.
Poland's Foreign Ministry echoed the concerns, discouraging travel to Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon. The ministry cautioned that an escalation of military operations could pose significant difficulties in leaving these countries, potentially leading to restrictions on air traffic and land border crossings.
India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement advising its citizens to refrain from traveling to Iran and Israel in light of the prevailing situation. It urged Indian citizens already in these countries to exercise utmost caution for their safety and limit their movements to the minimum.
The United States has restricted its employees in Israel and their family members from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Beersheba areas. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed the "real" and "viable" threat of an imminent Iranian attack on Israel. He further assured that the US would provide support to ensure Israel has the necessary means to defend itself.
In light of the escalating tensions, General Erik Kurilla, the top US commander for the Middle East, arrived in Israel for talks with military officials. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed solidarity with the US, stating that they were prepared to defend themselves in close cooperation with their partners.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Israel has been preparing for a potential attack by Iran, with an expected timeframe of Friday or Saturday. Israeli forces have increased alertness levels, mobilizing reservists and reinforcing air defense systems.
As tensions continue to rise, Israel has conducted airstrikes in the Gaza Strip and targeted Iranian personnel and allies in Syria and Lebanon. Reciprocally, they have faced near-daily cross-border fire with the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
It is crucial for individuals planning to travel to the region to heed the advisories issued by their respective governments and closely monitor the situation.
