In a recent interview with "America's Newsroom," Melody Jones, the mother of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, shed light on her son's detention in Russia and revealed her concerns regarding his Russian girlfriend. Black was arrested on theft charges in Vladivostok while visiting his girlfriend in May.
During the interview, Jones revealed that her son's Russian girlfriend had reached out to her over Facebook, requesting $600. Recognizing this as a red flag, Jones expressed her doubts and decided not to provide the requested funds. These events occurred just before Black's arrest, leading Jones to believe that her son's girlfriend may have been involved in the situation.
Jones also shared her deep-rooted intuition about her son's trip to Russia, admitting that she had begged him not to go. Her mother's intuition urged her to warn Black against taking the trip, expressing concerns about the potential outcome. Despite her warnings, Black proceeded with the visit, leading to his subsequent detainment.
The Pervomaisky District Court of Vladivostok stated that Black was detained based on the belief that he may try to evade authorities during the investigation and avoid facing responsibility for the charges. Russian officials claim that Black had secretly stolen from his girlfriend, causing her significant damage. A 32-year-old woman had filed a complaint against Black, stating that an argument had ensued between them, leading her to accuse him of theft.
Jones, in an earlier interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," voiced suspicions about her son's Russian girlfriend, describing the relationship as "volatile" and even questioning whether she could be a spy. She had specifically advised her son against traveling to Russia instead of returning home to the U.S. during his leave.
According to reports, Black will remain in pretrial detention until July 2, as determined by the Russian court. In response to the situation, the U.S. Army has launched an investigation into Black's travels, with a focus on any potential repercussions arising from his trip.
The case continues to develop, with Jones anxiously awaiting updates and hoping for a swift resolution to her son's detainment in Russia.
