A chilling incident unfolded at Wootton High School in Montgomery County, Maryland, as an 18-year-old student was arrested on Wednesday for an alleged mass shooting plot. Identified as Andrea Ye, who also goes by Alex and identifies as male despite being biologically female, Ye was apprehended by state and federal officials after a detailed investigation by the Montgomery County Police Department.
Police records reveal that Ye allegedly wrote a 129-page "manifesto" outlining the strategy for carrying out the sinister act. Although Ye claimed it was a fictional story, the manifesto raised concerns due to its alarming content. Moreover, troubling internet searches made by Ye served as additional evidence leading to the arrest and subsequent charges.
According to reports from 7News Maryland Bureau Chief Brad Bell, Ye had contemplated targeting an elementary school, intensifying the gravity of the situation. The charges against Ye are of a highly severe nature, involving alleged threats to harm others.
In a statement, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) expressed their appreciation for the close collaboration between the school district and the police department in addressing potential threats. Notably, Ye had not physically attended an MCPS school since the fall of 2022 but had been participating in virtual lessons through a program called Online Pathways to Graduation.
The alleged manifesto came to the attention of Baltimore police on March 3 when it was shared by another individual who knew Ye. Both individuals had received treatment at a psychiatric facility in Maryland. Ye had been receiving mental health treatment since December 2022 due to a series of alleged threats made by the teenager.
While Ye referred to the manifesto as a "memoir" or an "autobiography," witnesses and police were troubled by the realistic elements present in the document. Authorities were alerted when concerns were raised about Ye's mental state and the potential danger the student posed.
During a welfare check by Rockville City police, Ye's father revealed that he was aware of a story being written by the 18-year-old but had not read it. Documents state that between October 2022 and February 2023, Ye frequently made harmful comments towards others, expressing a desire to be famous for their actions.
Consequently, Ye has been charged with the threat of mass violence, an offense that entails knowingly threatening to commit a violent crime. The 18-year-old is currently being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
This is a developing story, and 7News will continue to provide the latest information on this alarming incident.
