San Francisco, CA - Mint Butterfield, the 16-year-old child of Slack's billionaire co-founder Stewart Butterfield and Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake, has been found alive in San Francisco. The teenager had been reported missing nearly one week ago, sparking widespread concern for their safety.
According to an email to the press from Stewart Butterfield, Mint was located by the Marin County Sheriff's Office and the San Francisco Police Department. Adam Schermerhorn, a public information officer with the Marin County Sheriff's Office, confirmed that Mint was found on the evening of April 27.
The family expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the recovery of Mint in a message relayed by the San Francisco Standard. They thanked family, friends, volunteers, and even strangers who provided tips, and particularly acknowledged the seasoned law enforcement officers involved in the search.
In an earlier press release from the Marin County Sheriff's Office, Mint was described as a "voluntary missing person." Caterina Fake first reported Mint as missing after finding a note on the morning of April 22 indicating their departure. Mint was last seen on April 21 in Bolinas, California, at approximately 10 p.m.
Law enforcement authorities have stated that there is no indication of foul play or criminal involvement in connection to Mint's disappearance. The Sheriff's Office considered Mint a voluntary-missing juvenile who was "At-Risk" due to a reported previous threat of suicide.
The police noted that Mint did not have access to a vehicle or phone, making their departure from the area unclear. However, based on statements from Mint's mother, it was believed that they might have traveled to the Tenderloin District of San Francisco, approximately 30 miles away from Bolinas.
The news of Mint's safe return brings relief to their worried family, friends, and community. Mint's parents, Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake, are well-known figures in the tech industry. They co-founded Flickr in 2004 before selling it to Yahoo in 2005. Stewart went on to co-found Slack, which was acquired for $27.7 billion in July 2021.
Although Stewart Butterfield left Slack in 2022, his personal wealth is estimated to be $1.6 billion, according to Forbes. Despite their success, the focus now is on Mint's well-being and ensuring they receive the support they need following this challenging period.
The circumstances surrounding Mint's disappearance and subsequent discovery have not been disclosed, but law enforcement agencies and the family are grateful for the outcome. Providing support to at-risk individuals, especially teenagers facing mental health challenges, remains a priority for communities, law enforcement, and organizations alike.
