In a tragic turn of events, Lucas Macaj, the missing hiker in Rocky Mountain National Park, has been identified as a U.S. Space Force sergeant from the Schriever Space Force Base. Macaj, 23 years old, served as a space operator for the 8th Combat Training Squadron, which is part of Space Delta 8 headquartered at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs.

The news of his identification was met with sadness and condolences from his colleagues. Col. David A Pheasant, the commander of Space Delta 8, expressed his deepest sympathies to Macaj's family, friends, and teammates. He assured that their team would provide full support to those grieving this loss by offering access to trained helping agencies.

Macaj enlisted in the U.S. Space Force in August 2023, transferring from the U.S. Marine Corps. During his service, he received the prestigious Air and Space Longevity Service Award. His commitment and dedication to his duty were evident throughout his career.

Tragically, Macaj's remains were recovered on Thursday near the base of Lamb's Slide on Mills Glacier. Initial investigations indicate that he had suffered a significant fall. Swift action was taken to transport Macaj's body to a landing zone in Rocky Mountain National Park, where it was then transferred to the Boulder County Coroner's Office.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office will now conduct an autopsy and investigation to determine the cause of Macaj's untimely death. It is believed that he went missing after attempting to summit Longs Peak on Sunday. The last communication received from Macaj was a text message to a friend at 1 p.m., stating that he had reached the summit.

Rangers discovered Macaj's vehicle still parked at the Longs Peak Trailhead early Monday morning. Weather conditions at high elevations on Sunday were challenging, with significant storms passing through the park, adding to the difficulties faced by the missing hiker.
