In a surprising turn of events, State Senator Nicole Mitchell of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) was arrested on Monday morning in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and booked into the Becker County Jail on charges of suspected first-degree burglary.
According to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd, a 911 call was received at 4:45 a.m. from a homeowner on Granger Road reporting a burglar inside their residence. Responding officers apprehended the intruder, who was later identified as Senator Mitchell. The 49-year-old Mitchell remains listed on the jail's roster as of early Monday afternoon.
Elected to the Senate in 2022, Mitchell represents Woodbury and is currently serving her first term. She holds the position of vice chair on the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans Committee. Prior to her political career, Mitchell worked as a TV meteorologist for KSTP and Minnesota Public Radio and also held the rank of commander in the Air National Guard's 126th Weather Flight.
News of Mitchell's arrest was initially reported by KVRR-TV, a local station based in Fargo, North Dakota. However, the Senate DFL Caucus declined to comment on the matter, with spokesperson Marc Kimball stating, "The Senate DFL Caucus is aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information."
Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding the location of the alleged burglary. A Senate DFL source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the house in question belongs to the senator's late father's widow.
As the news of Senator Mitchell's arrest continues to unfold, further details regarding the incident and potential legal consequences are yet to emerge. It remains to be seen how this development will impact her political career and standing within the Senate.
