Minnesota Governor and Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, Tim Walz, has vehemently defended his military service in the face of recent Republican criticisms. Following allegations from Republican Senator JD Vance, who accused Walz of misrepresenting his military experience and committing "stolen valor," Walz took the opportunity during the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees 2024 convention in Los Angeles to express his pride in his service record.

Walz's comments mark the first time he has publicly addressed the criticisms aimed at his 24-year career in the Army National Guard. Vance, who is Donald Trump's running mate, questioned Walz's service and accused him of lying about his military experience. Vance claimed that Walz had not served in any combat zones and criticized him for misrepresenting his military background.

The controversy surrounding Walz's military service began when Vance and other Republicans targeted Walz's retirement from the military, suggesting that he did so to avoid deployment to Iraq. However, there is no evidence to support these allegations. Both Walz and Vance served in the military but neither have combat experience.

Walz filed paperwork in February 2005 to run for Congress, prior to the Minnesota National Guard being informed about potential deployment. In response, Walz highlighted his motivation for joining the Army National Guard at the age of 17 and serving for 24 years out of love for the country. He also expressed his desire to serve his country in the halls of Congress in 2005.

Vance responded to Walz's statements by asserting that Walz should not have lied about his military experience and accused him of falsely claiming he had gone to war when he hadn't. Vance expressed willingness to engage in further discussions during a debate. However, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor her running mate, Tim Walz, have announced a specific date for such a debate.

The scrutiny surrounding Walz's military rank intensified when the Harris campaign updated its online biography last week. The description of Walz as a "retired command sergeant major" was replaced with "served as a command sergeant major," according to reports from POLITICO.

Walz has faced similar accusations regarding his military service during past political campaigns, including during his 2018 race for governor. Retired command sergeant majors wrote a paid letter to the editor alleging that Walz had misrepresented his rank during the campaign.

Despite these criticisms, Walz remains proud of his military service and reiterated his gratitude towards all those who have served the country in uniform, including his opponent. He emphasized the importance of respecting and acknowledging the sacrifices made by brave individuals who have worn the uniform for their country.
