### Milford Community Rallies for Detained High School Student

An 18-year-old high school junior, Marcelo Gomes Da Silva, known for his athletic prowess and musical talent, has been detained by immigration authorities, sending shockwaves through Milford, Massachusetts. Marcelo, described as having an infectious smile and a promising future, was arrested this past weekend by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Marcelo was on his way to volleyball practice, driving his father’s car with teammates, when ICE officers pulled them over. The authorities were initially searching for Marcelo’s father, who is unlawfully present in the country. However, upon discovering Marcelo's undocumented status, they took him into custody as well. Todd Lyons, acting director of ICE, explained that although Marcelo was not the target of their operation, he was detained during a broader monthlong enforcement campaign that has seen nearly 1,500 arrests in Massachusetts.

Marcelo has been a student in Milford Public Schools since the age of six, making his detention particularly impactful for the community. Kevin McIntyre, superintendent of Milford Public Schools, expressed deep concern, emphasizing that the district supports all of its students and their families, including those who are immigrants. He assured the community that the school system would continue to offer its support in these challenging times.

The arrest not only impacted Marcelo’s routine but also had a significant emotional effect on his peers. He was scheduled to play the drums at his girlfriend Julianys Rentas Figueroa’s high school graduation ceremony on Sunday, but his absence was keenly felt. This prompted a post-graduation protest march to Milford Town Hall, where hundreds of students, teachers, and community members gathered, holding signs and chanting “Free Marcelo.”

Julianys shared the distressing details of their phone conversation, revealing how Marcelo was restrained with chains around his ankles and wrists. Following his detention, he has been transferred between different holding facilities in Massachusetts, adding to the uncertainty faced by his family.

The situation took a toll on Marcelo's younger siblings, who now worry if they will see him again. The Metrowest Worker Center, an immigration advocacy group in Massachusetts, has stepped in to provide support, with immigration attorneys working to prevent his transfer to a detention center in another state.

Milford police clarified that they were not involved in ICE's operation, underscoring that Marcelo’s lack of a criminal record is indicative of his good character. Even Gov. Maura Healey has voiced her displeasure, decrying the arrest as a move that diminishes public safety.

Amid the protests, one friend’s comment encapsulated the community’s sentiment: "I am disgusted that I have to deal with this on graduation and see one of my greatest friends be taken away for no reason." This statement reflects the broader anguish and solidarity in Milford as the town grapples with the repercussions of Marcelo’s detention.
