### Mexican Mayor Found Decapitated Just Days After Taking Office
Alejandro Arcos, the newly elected mayor of Chilpancingo in southwestern Mexico, was brutally murdered just six days after assuming office. This tragic event underscores the severe level of violence faced by public officials in the state of Guerrero, one of Mexico's most dangerous regions.
Guerrero's Governor Evelyn Salgado expressed profound sorrow and outrage over the assassination, stating that his death greatly affects the entire community of Guerrero. The state's attorney general's office has launched an investigation into the incident.
Shocking images surfaced on WhatsApp showing a severed head placed on a pick-up truck, which was believed to be that of Arcos. The authenticity of these images has not been independently verified by Reuters.
The killing of Arcos followed closely on the heels of another tragic event; just three days prior, Francisco Tapia, the new city government's secretary, was shot dead. Both men were known as young, honest officials committed to the betterment of their community.
Senator Alejandro Moreno, head of Mexico's PRI political party, has called on the federal attorney general’s office to take the lead in investigating the murders of Arcos and Tapia, citing the prevailing disorder in Guerrero. This state has emerged as one of the deadliest for politicians and journalists alike, with at least six candidates for public office murdered in the lead-up to the June 2 elections.
