In a tragic incident in Ukraine, Ryan Evans, a media security adviser from Wrexham, has lost his life while working with a news crew from Reuters news agency. The devastating incident occurred when the hotel where they were staying was struck by a missile on Saturday.

The 38-year-old, who had attended Ysgol Morgan Llwyd school and later served in the Royal Welsh regiment, was described by his family as "a gentle giant" who always went above and beyond to help others. Mr. Evans, survived by his wife, Anne, and their four children, was hailed as a loving husband and father.

The attack took place at the Hotel Sapphire in Kramatorsk, which is located near the front line and under Ukrainian control. Ukrainian authorities have reported that the hotel was hit by a Russian missile, although Russia has not yet issued any response.

Anne Evans, expressing her grief on Facebook, paid a heartfelt tribute to her beloved husband, stating how much he meant to her and how he was her best friend and soul mate. She referred to him as a "knight in battered armor" due to the numerous battles he had faced throughout his life.

The staff at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, where Mr. Evans had once studied, also expressed their condolences. Head teacher Catrin Pritchard described him as a likeable person with a big heart, ensuring that he will be fondly remembered by several members of staff.

Following his military service, Mr. Evans trained as a close protection specialist, providing security for journalists and aid workers in challenging environments. Chris Hunter, his colleague and a bomb disposal expert, hailed him as a "natural warrior" who was tough, strong, and fierce, yet kind and funny. Hunter emphasized Mr. Evans' unmatched bravery and dedication, as well as his commitment to making the world a safer place.

The Ukrainian General Prosecutor's Office stated that the hotel was likely targeted by a Russian short-range Iskander-M missile. Kramatorsk, which is situated approximately 20km (12 miles) from Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, has witnessed frequent attacks resulting in civilian casualties.

Expressing deep sadness, a spokesperson from Reuters news agency confirmed the death of Ryan Evans, their safety advisor. Two journalists are currently receiving medical treatment, with one in serious condition. Three other colleagues have been accounted for and are safe. The news agency expressed their condolences and admiration for Mr. Evans, who had played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of their journalists during global events.

As tensions escalate in Ukraine, with Russia launching missiles and drones into more than half of the country's regions on Monday, the international community is anxiously awaiting developments and hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The loss of Ryan Evans has left a profound void, not only in the lives of his family and colleagues but also in the field of media security. His remarkable contributions and selfless nature will be dearly missed.
