**Mayor Jacobs Denounces Hurricane Helene Response Misinformation, Urges Cooperation**
Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs joined local officials to condemn ongoing rumors and skepticism surrounding FEMA's response to Hurricane Helene's devastation in the southeastern U.S. In an online post, Jacobs cautioned that baseless attacks on the administration could hinder recovery efforts.
"To my knowledge, FEMA, TEMA, nor anyone else is confiscating supplies," Jacobs, also known as a former professional wrestler, stated on the social platform X. "Please quit spreading those rumors as they are counterproductive to response efforts." He further urged the public to put aside divisive sentiments and contribute positively to the relief efforts.
These remarks came in response to a series of allegations, suggesting that FEMA lacked sufficient funds for disaster relief, misappropriated cash donations, and rejected volunteer assistance. The criticism also followed comments from former President Trump, who suggested that FEMA might divert hurricane funds to manage migrant issues. The White House rebuked these claims, accusing the GOP of leveraging Hurricane Helene to sow discord.
To combat misinformation, FEMA launched a "rumor response" page, encouraging the public to seek and disseminate information exclusively from reliable sources. The agency emphasized that it does not confiscate donations or coordinate road closures, clarifying that such tasks fall under the purview of local law enforcement and specialized voluntary agencies.
In a separate message on X, Jacobs argued for state-level self-sufficiency, citing Florida as a model for reduced federal dependency. "I understand the frustration with FEMA and the wasted money and resources," he wrote. "At the same time, conservatives shouldn't be looking to the federal government to fix anything."
North Carolina State Senator Kevin Corbin echoed similar sentiments, urging the public to disregard "conspiracy theory junk" and focus on constructive dialogue and actions.
