### Mayor Eric Adams Fights Bribery Charges, Claims Political Motivation

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is pushing back against federal bribery allegations, with his legal team urging a judge to dismiss the charges. At a press conference on Monday, Adams' attorney, Alex Spiro, criticized the prosecution for purported ethical missteps and maintained that the benefits the Mayor received do not meet the legal definition of bribes.

Adams, a Democrat, pleaded not guilty last Friday to accusations of accepting extravagant travel perks and illicit campaign donations from Turkish officials and other foreign nationals. In return, he is accused of facilitating the approval for a Turkish consulate building. In a motion filed early Monday, Adams' attorneys contended that the complimentary flights, seat upgrades, gourmet meals, and hotel accommodations he received should not be classified as bribes under federal law.

Spiro emphasized that courtesies extended to politicians, such as upgraded flights and better seating arrangements at restaurants, are common and not criminal acts. He added that while Adams did accept some of these perks, there was no evidence of any quid pro quo arrangement with the Turkish government.

"There was no quid pro quo. There was no this for that," Spiro stated, reinforcing his client's stance.

Despite the serious allegations, Mayor Adams has promised to continue his duties, suggesting without proof that the charges are driven by political motives.

The controversy is further complicated by ongoing federal investigations into several top city officials closely associated with Adams. Recent events, including multiple searches and subpoenas, have led to the resignations of the city's police commissioner and schools chancellor. These developments have sparked calls for Adams' resignation.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat, disclosed that she had discussed the matter with Mayor Adams. She shared her expectations but indicated she is not yet ready to lose faith in his administration.
