A massive fire engulfing a propane trailer on the Portland I-5 yesterday caused significant traffic disruptions and raised concerns about the safety of the driver. Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) crews were quick to respond to the scene, but found no sign of the driver or the truck cab.

The fire, which started in the driver's side wheel well area of the trailer, was swiftly brought under control by the efforts of firefighters. However, the northbound section of I-5 between North Skidmore and Going Streets remained closed for nearly 12 hours as damage assessment and repairs were undertaken, causing severe commuter congestion throughout the day.

Sergeant Allen of the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) provided updates on the incident on Wednesday afternoon. He clarified that the investigation into the fire was being handled by PF&R's Portland Fire Investigations Unit, which consists of five sworn law enforcement officers serving as investigators. The fire investigations unit determined that the blaze was likely caused by a mechanical issue.

Surprisingly, the driver had left the scene in the truck cab, abandoning the burning trailer behind. However, the driver promptly reported the incident to a company representative. Fortunately, the driver is fully cooperating with investigators, and law enforcement officials no longer require him to come forward.

Sergeant Allen emphasized that no criminal activity was suspected in connection with the incident. However, he acknowledged the possibility of civil or regulatory consequences, which could be explored outside the current scope of the investigation.

While the driver's departure from the scene without exchanging information might seem questionable, it is important to note that no laws require a driver involved in a non-crash incident to remain at the scene. Authorities are primarily focused on determining the cause of the fire and any potential safety issues related to the trailer.

As the investigation continues, both PF&R and PPB are urging the public to remain patient and vigilant, as similar incidents could have devastating consequences. It is crucial for trucking companies and drivers to prioritize regular maintenance, safety inspections, and adhere to proper protocols to prevent future incidents.

Although no definitive conclusions have been reached yet, authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of drivers and travelers alike on Portland's busy roadways.
