Howard County Police have made a major breakthrough in a wide-scale theft investigation, recovering approximately 15,000 stolen construction tools. The discovery, believed to be one of the largest cases of theft in the region, came as a result of an ongoing investigation that began earlier this year. Although no arrests have been made yet, authorities are closing in on charging multiple suspects.
The recovered tools, including drills, chainsaws, generators, and various other construction equipment, are currently being sorted through at a confidential warehouse location in Howard County. This vast collection represents just a portion of the items found so far, emphasizing the scope of the investigation.
Police Chief Gregory Der revealed that the investigation was initially sparked by a tip from a victim in Virginia back in January. The victim's stolen tools had a tracking device that led investigators to a storage unit in Elkridge. From there, a series of meticulously executed search warrants, 11 of which were in Howard County, uncovered the stolen tools worth an estimated $3-to-5 million.
The stolen construction tools were taken from businesses, vehicles, and construction sites across Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Shockingly, approximately 25% of the recovered tools were brand new, still in their original boxes. Investigators have discovered that the stolen items were being sold at various locations.
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball expressed relief at the substantial progress made in the case, stating, "Howard County is a community where all of our residents are not only safe, but should feel safe. We just took another giant leap toward achieving that goal."
As of now, authorities have identified around 80 victims, but they suspect that the actual number could reach into the hundreds. The investigative team is diligently working to track down and return each tool to its rightful owner.
Chief Der emphasized the significant impact these thefts have had on the victims, with some reporting the loss of work due to their stolen tools. The repercussions extend far beyond the cost of replacing the stolen items, affecting their livelihoods.
To facilitate the process, police have set up an online form for victims to claim their tools. Victims are urged to visit the provided link to initiate the recovery procedure.
The investigation into this massive construction tool theft continues, with authorities determined to bring the culprits to justice and restore a sense of security to the community.
