In response to the increasing number of migrants seeking refuge in Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey has dispatched five state officials to Texas this week. The officials' mission was to dissuade incoming migrants from traveling to Massachusetts and to address the state's overburdened shelter system.

During their visit, the officials met with border patrol agents and visited various points of entry, including the San Antonio Airport, the San Antonio Migrant Resource Center and Shelter, and the Brownsville Migrant Welcome Center. These locations are often used by migrants who later arrive in Massachusetts, according to a press release from the governor's office.

The main message delivered by the officials centered around the lack of shelter space in Massachusetts due to the influx of asylum seekers. The state's overburdened shelter system is already struggling to accommodate new arrivals. "This trip is an important opportunity to meet with families arriving in the U.S. and the organizations that work with them at the border to make sure they have accurate information about the lack of shelter space in Massachusetts," said Emergency Assistance Director General Scott Rice.

Massachusetts is bound by right-to-shelter laws, which require the state to provide shelter for anyone seeking refuge within its borders. However, the strain on the system has reached a breaking point. A May report revealed that the state had spent nearly $400,000 on "vaccine record reviews" for migrants and individuals staying in emergency shelters. The same report showed total spending on the state's emergency housing assistance program surpassing $591 million.

Governor Healey anticipates spending an additional $932 million this fiscal year and $915 million the following year to accommodate for the influx of migrants, according to the Boston Herald. The financial burden has prompted the governor to take action in order to divert migrants from choosing Massachusetts as their destination.

Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the potential criminal backgrounds of some arrivals. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently announced the deportation of an Ecuadorian national who was wanted for rape charges in their home country.

The visit by Massachusetts officials to Texas highlights the urgent need to address the strain on the state's shelter system caused by the influx of migrants. Governor Healey's efforts to dissuade migrants from traveling to Massachusetts aim to ensure that the limited shelter space is available for those who truly need it.
