Birmingham, Alabama - In a tragic turn of events, a mass shooting unfolded late Saturday night in the vibrant Five Points South district of Birmingham, Alabama. Four people lost their lives, and 18 others sustained injuries as multiple suspects opened fire on a crowded area filled with nightlife venues. The incident occurred after 11 p.m. when several individuals arrived in a vehicle, discharged their weapons, and quickly fled the scene, leaving chaos and devastation in their wake.
Police Chief Scott Thurmond revealed during a press conference on Sunday morning that the shooting may have been orchestrated as a targeted attack, possibly carried out in exchange for payment. The suspects, after arriving at the location, swiftly unleashed gunfire before making a hasty retreat. The victims, two men, a woman, and another male, were discovered with gunshot wounds at the scene. Tragically, despite efforts to save them, the authorities confirmed their deaths.
During the press conference, Mayor Randall Woodfin and officials from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives stood alongside Chief Thurmond to address the horrific incident. Thurmond noted that while one of the deceased individuals appeared to be the main target, the remaining victims were unfortunate bystanders ensnared in the crossfire. The situation escalated further as injured individuals began arriving at hospitals, prompting the police to swiftly identify a total of 18 victims, some of whom suffered life-threatening injuries.
