Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced on Sunday that the massive container ship, the Dali, which caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore in March, will be removed "within days." Despite initial concerns that it could take several months to repair the channel, Governor Moore expressed pride in the progress made to reopen the federal channel and promptly remove the vessel from its current location.
The Dali has remained lodged in the middle of the Patapsco River since the collision with the Key Bridge in the middle of the night. Tragically, six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time of the incident were presumed dead. However, all of their bodies have been recovered, with the latest recovery taking place on May 7.
In recent weeks, efforts to clear the wreckage and reopen the channel have intensified. Precision explosive charges were utilized earlier this month to remove debris and parts of the collapsed bridge from on top of the ship. This painstaking monthslong process is crucial to facilitate the reopening of the channel, which is essential for the functioning of the international shipping port in Baltimore.
Governor Moore also addressed concerns regarding the financial implications of the removal and channel reopening efforts. He reassured the public that "the American people will be made whole on this," emphasizing the importance of completing the project within the agreed budget and timeline.
With the imminent removal of the Dali and the reopening of the federal channel, Maryland is one step closer to restoring normalcy to the affected area. The elimination of the sunken ship will not only help the flow of shipping traffic but will also bring closure to the tragic incident that occurred on that fateful night in March.
Governor Moore's commitment to ensuring the swift and efficient completion of this effort is a testament to his dedication to the welfare of Maryland and its residents. As the days pass, the anticipation grows for the removal of the Dali, marking an essential milestone in the recovery process from the Key Bridge collapse.
