Northwestern University has announced the appointment of Mark Jackson as the new Combe Family Vice President for Athletics & Recreation. Jackson, a seasoned athletics manager with decades of experience in professional and collegiate administrations, will assume his new role on September 1.

Jackson, currently serving as the athletic director at Villanova University, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to join Northwestern. He praised the university's commitment to excellence in academics and athletics, stating that their mission and values align with his own beliefs and approach. He eagerly looks forward to engaging with the Wildcat community and supporting the success of student-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty, alumni, and fans.

The nationwide search for the position involved a diverse group of highly qualified candidates, with Jackson standing out through his record of effective strategic leadership and dedication to student-athlete success. Northwestern President Michael Schill commended Jackson for his proven ability to support athletes both academically and athletically and expressed confidence in his capacity to lead Northwestern Athletics to new heights.

Having been appointed as the athletic director at Villanova in 2015 and later promoted to vice president in 2020, Jackson has overseen 24 varsity sports programs and more than 600 student-athletes, along with intramural and recreational programs. Under his leadership, Villanova Athletics experienced remarkable success, with 14 of its varsity programs competing in NCAA tournaments and the men's basketball team securing two national championships.

The appointment of Jackson as Northwestern's new vice president for Athletics & Recreation is seen as a pivotal moment for the university. Board of Trustees Chair Peter Barris emphasized the importance of success in the Department of Athletics and Recreation, and believes that Jackson's exceptional leadership qualities will further enhance Northwestern's academic and athletic excellence.

As Jackson assumes the role, Northwestern Athletics is already experiencing impressive achievements in various sports, including sustained success in field hockey and lacrosse, recent national championships, and notable performances in men's basketball and football.

In addition to his extensive collegiate experience, Jackson also brings professional experience from his time with the Oakland Raiders and the New England Patriots. He holds a bachelor's degree in government from Colby College and a master's degree in public policy from Trinity College.

The Northwestern community, including coaches, faculty, and alumni, holds high expectations for the future of the university's athletic program under Jackson's leadership.
