Entrepreneur and television personality, Mark Cuban, voiced his disagreement with former President Donald Trump's proposed 200% tariff on John Deere's products if the company follows through with moving some of its production to Mexico. Cuban criticized the plan, stating that imposing higher tariffs on an American company relocating to Mexico while keeping lower tariffs on Chinese manufacturers would lead to detrimental consequences for the company and American buyers.
The clash between Cuban and Trump stemmed from John Deere's announcement to shift its production of skid steer loaders and compact track loaders from Iowa to a facility in Mexico, resulting in job losses in Iowa. During a policy roundtable in Pennsylvania, Trump condemned the move, emphasizing the negative impact on farmers and manufacturing in the US, and pledged to impose hefty tariffs on the company. In response, Cuban highlighted the flaws in Trump's approach, pointing out the potential harm it could cause to the iconic American company and consumers.
John Deere defended its decision by emphasizing its commitment to U.S. manufacturing and optimizing production efficiencies. The company's spokesperson explained that they continuously evaluate production processes to leverage their skilled workforce and enhance manufacturing capabilities in the US. Cuban, while acknowledging that moving operations to Mexico is permitted under the USMCA trade agreement orchestrated by Trump, cautioned against relying on tariffs as a solution, citing their inflationary effects across the board.
