Marian Robinson, the beloved mother of former first lady Michelle Obama, passed away at the age of 86, her family announced on Friday. Born in 1937 and raised on Chicago's South Side, Robinson was one of seven children. She pursued a career as a teacher before transitioning into a role as a secretary.

Robinson married Fraser Robinson, and together they had two children, Michelle and Craig Robinson. Sadly, Fraser passed away in 1991. When her son-in-law, former President Barack Obama, won the presidency in 2008, the family convinced Robinson to move into the White House.

"We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all," expressed the family in their statement on Friday. In an interview with "CBS Mornings" in 2018, Robinson described the experience as a "huge adjustment" but felt compelled to do it to ensure the safety and well-being of her granddaughters, Sasha and Malia Obama.

During her time at the White House, Robinson quickly became a beloved figure, offering support and understanding to the staff. Michelle Obama fondly recalled how various staff members would stop by her mother's room, considering it a confessional where they could unload before leaving.

After Obama's second term came to an end, Robinson returned to Chicago, reconnecting with old friends, enjoying travel, and savoring a good glass of wine, as stated by her family. Although she admitted not missing the White House itself, she deeply missed the people, as they had become her extended family.

As a devoted mother and grandmother, Robinson provided a steady presence and an unwavering love for her family. She offered support, understanding, and a warm welcome, no matter how far her loved ones had journeyed. Her family expressed their gratitude for her being the calm and nonjudgmental witness to their triumphs and stumbles.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden issued a statement on Saturday, remembering Robinson as a devoted mother and grandmother who possessed an unconditional love for her family. The Bidens acknowledged that they, too, felt her love through her quiet smiles and warm embraces, emphasizing the belief that family is the foundation of our nation's strength.

Marian Robinson's life was a testament to the importance of family and the unwavering love and support that can sustain and uplift. Her presence in the White House and her devotion to her loved ones serve as a reminder that a nation's greatness lies in the goodness of its people.
