In a heartbreaking announcement, the family of Marian Robinson revealed that she had peacefully passed away on Friday morning at the age of 86. Robinson, mother of former US First Lady Michelle Obama, played a significant role during the eight years of Barack Obama's administration, where she became a well-known figure at the White House.

During her time at the White House, Robinson dedicated herself to caring for her two granddaughters, Malia and Sasha, the daughters of Michelle and Barack Obama. In a statement shared on a social media platform, Michelle Obama expressed her deep sadness and referred to Robinson as her "rock" and someone who was always there for her. She described Robinson as the steady pillar of support for their entire family.

Barack Obama also shared his grief and paid tribute to Robinson, stating that there was and will be only one Marian Robinson. He acknowledged the extraordinary gift of her life and expressed his commitment to live up to her example. The cause of Robinson's death was not specified in the family's statement.

Born in 1937, Robinson grew up in Chicago as one of seven children. Before coming to Washington DC after Barack Obama's electoral victory, she pursued a career in teaching and later worked as a secretary. She raised Michelle and her brother Craig with her husband Frasier Robinson on Chicago's South Side.

The statement issued by the Obamas described Robinson as their refuge from the storm and highlighted her presence on Election Night in 2008 when Barack Obama made history as the first African-American president. A memorable photo captured Robinson sitting next to her son-in-law, watching the election results.

The statement further revealed that Robinson moved to the White House upon the insistence of Barack and Michelle Obama, who believed they and their daughters needed her support. Robinson, known for her humility, insisted on doing her own laundry during her time there.

In an interview with CBS, Robinson explained her decision to move to Washington, expressing concern for her daughter and son-in-law's safety and the well-being of her grandchildren. She described the adjustment to having her needs met by White House staff as significant, preferring to spend her time in a room with windows overlooking the Washington Monument rather than engaging in social events.

Having held the unique title of "first grandma," Robinson was considered the most popular person in the White House. Her priorities were focused on her family, with the Pope being the only guest she specifically requested to meet.

Although the cause of her death was not disclosed, Robinson's passing leaves a void in the Obama family and the nation. She will be remembered for her unwavering support and love for her family, as well as her humility and dedication to their well-being.

As the news of Robinson's passing emerges, the ex-President emerged from home hospice care to attend a memorial service for his wife of 77 years. The solemn event was attended by Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton, who came together to honor another former US first lady.

In a separate interview, Michelle Obama, alongside Amal Clooney and Melinda French Gates, spoke to the BBC about the urgent need to end child marriage, showcasing their shared concern for global issues beyond the realm of politics.
