In a hearing held on Monday, Naresh Bhatt, a 37-year-old resident of Manassas Park, Virginia, was denied bond by Judge Lisa M. Baird in connection with the mysterious disappearance of his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt. Bhatt stands charged with concealing a dead body, while prosecutors argue that he poses a danger to the community and is a flight risk.
Mamta Bhatt, a 28-year-old pediatric nurse and first-time mother, was last seen on July 28. Concerns grew when she failed to show up for her shift at UVA Prince William Medical Center on August 2, prompting coworkers to request a welfare check. Naresh Bhatt, however, did not report his wife missing until August 5.
During the court hearing, prosecutors shed light on the couple's troubled marital history, including prior incidents of domestic abuse. A friend close to Mamta informed the police that she had suffered from bruises in the months leading up to her disappearance and described her as "depressed."
Prosecutors also revealed unsettling details regarding Naresh Bhatt's Google search history in the months before his wife vanished. Searches included inquiries about the appropriate time to remarry after a spouse's death and what happens in the event of a spouse's demise, sparking further speculation about his possible involvement.
Furthermore, evidence presented during the hearing indicated that police had been called to the Bhatt residence on Heather Court earlier this year due to disorderly conduct. The incident involved Naresh Bhatt refusing to hand over Mamta's documents and allegedly destroying her phone.
Despite claims by his defense attorney, Shalev Ben-Avraham, that the amount of blood found in the Bhatt home was minimal, prosecutors argued that it was enough to support the charges. Ben-Avraham also criticized the media's portrayal of the case, labeling it a "news media frenzy" that influenced the issuance of search warrants.
Additionally, prosecutors shared crucial information about Naresh Bhatt's purchases leading up to Mamta's disappearance. Notably, he bought cleaning supplies, including carpet cleaner, disinfectant wipes, and air fresheners on July 31. It was also revealed that he purchased a pack of three knives, and two of them remained unaccounted for after a search of their home last week.
In a surprising revelation, Naresh informed authorities during a wellness check on August 2 that he and Mamta were in the process of separating, and on August 15, he notified officials of his intentions to send their one-year-old daughter back to Nepal.
As the investigation continues and the search for Mamta Bhatt intensifies, friends, coworkers, and the local Nepalese community have rallied together, determined to find her and bring her killer to justice. The missing woman's remains have not been found, although evidence strongly suggests she is no longer alive.
The denial of bond for Naresh Bhatt provides some measure of relief to those following the case closely. Holly Wirth, a former coworker of Mamta's at Inova Health System, expressed satisfaction after the hearing, stating, "We were vindicated. This is based on case law and statutes. Mr. Bhatt is where he needs to be."
The investigation into Mamta Bhatt's disappearance remains ongoing as law enforcement agencies and the community endeavor to unravel the truth behind this tragic event.
