In a shocking turn of events, the man who was arrested for attacking President Azali Assoumani of Comoros has been found dead in his prison cell. The incident occurred during a funeral for a prominent religious leader, where the president was injured in the hand by a knife-wielding assailant.

According to National prosecutor Ali Mohamed Djounaid, the attacker had been isolated in a cell to calm him down after his arrest. However, on Saturday morning, prison authorities discovered his lifeless body on the floor of the cell. The cause of his death remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding it.

During a press conference in Moroni, the capital of the Indian Ocean archipelago, Mr. Djounaid stated that President Azali Assoumani was in good health and out of danger. He received stitches for his injuries and is recovering well. Energy minister Aboubacar Saïd Anli confirmed this information and added that the president has no underlying health issues.

The motive behind the attack on Friday remains unclear, and authorities are actively investigating the incident. The assailant has been identified as Ahmed Abdou, a 24-year-old soldier. Witnesses reported seeing him in the room where mourners were paying their respects to the deceased. It was during this time that he allegedly stabbed the president before being subdued by one of the attendees.

President Azali Assoumani, who came to power through a military coup in 1999, was re-elected last January after winning a disputed election in 2016. However, his administration has faced accusations of growing authoritarianism. This recent attack has raised concerns about the president's security, with the public prosecutor blaming lax measures and a government spokesperson suspecting a pre-planned act.

As the investigation into the attacker's death and the motive for the attack continues, the people of Comoros are left to grapple with the aftermath of this unsettling incident. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by political leaders in maintaining their safety and security.
