A man has been arrested on Sunday for allegedly setting a fire outside the office of Senator Bernie Sanders in Burlington, Vermont. The suspect, identified as Shant Soghomonian, is facing charges of using fire to damage the building, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's office for Vermont. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident.
According to the U.S. attorney's office, Soghomonian entered the building on Friday morning and made his way to the third floor, where Sanders' office is located. Security video footage revealed that the suspect sprayed a liquid near the office door before igniting it with a handheld lighter. The fire quickly grew in intensity and engulfed the door, making it difficult for staffers to escape. Ultimately, the building's sprinkler system activated, extinguishing most of the fire.
The extent of the damage caused by the fire includes the exterior of the door and the hallway. Sanders was not present in the office at the time of the incident, according to the Burlington Police Department. The motive behind Soghomonian's actions remains unclear.
Soghomonian, who previously resided in the Northridge neighborhood of California, could potentially face a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of up to $250,000. Currently, the U.S. Attorney's office has not identified a lawyer representing him.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched involving multiple agencies including the Burlington Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Vermont State Police, and the U.S. Capitol Police.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from Senator Bernie Sanders' office regarding the incident.
The arrest of the suspect brings some relief and closure to the incident, but local authorities will continue to investigate the motive behind the alleged arson attack.
