In a tragic incident yesterday, a Los Angeles City firefighter recruit, identified as 22-year-old Jacob Fuerte, lost his life while providing aid to victims in a multi-vehicle crash on the 101 Freeway in Studio City. The Los Angeles City Fire Department expressed their deepest sympathy to Fuerte's immediate family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway at Campo de Cahuenga. Multiple vehicles, including a trailer pulling a portable toilet, were involved in the collision. As a result, a SigAlert was issued at 5:30 a.m., shutting down four lanes of traffic while authorities investigated the scene.
Fuerte tragically succumbed to his injuries at the crash site. He was in week 10 of a 20-week training program with the Los Angeles City Fire Department. A procession, consisting of fellow first responders, was held in honor of Fuerte. They accompanied his body to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office, where an American flag-draped casket was carried by members of his training class.
LAFD Public Information Officer Erik Scott expressed condolences to Fuerte's family and highlighted the courage displayed by all first responders in their daily efforts to help others. Scott also revealed that Fuerte's father is a 17-year veteran of the department.
Late on Monday, Scott announced that California Highway Patrol investigators are treating the incident as a potential hit-and-run. Public cooperation is crucial, and anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact the CHP West Valley office at (818) 888-0980.
All four lanes of the 101 Freeway remained closed for approximately three hours following the crash. Two lanes reopened around 9 a.m. as the investigation continued. Commuters are advised to stay updated on the latest traffic information.
As the investigation unfolds, the Los Angeles City Fire Department intends to keep the public informed regarding details of the memorial service for Jacob Fuerte.
