**Los Angeles DA to Decide Fate of Menendez Brothers' Resentencing**
The fate of Erik and Lyle Menendez, infamously convicted of murdering their parents in 1996, may soon see a significant turn. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has announced that he will reveal his decision on possible resentencing for the brothers by the end of the week, according to his statements to PEOPLE magazine.
Gascón articulated his views on the issue, indicating that he does not perceive the brothers as a threat to society. "Quite frankly, they probably haven't been for a very long time, if they ever were. I think this is not like they were going around killing people or robbing people on the street," Gascón remarked.
The ultimate decision on whether Erik and Lyle Menendez will be resentenced lies with a judge, should Gascón recommend it. The Menendez brothers' notorious case reached its climax in March 1996, when they were convicted for the brutal murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. Later that year, they were handed life sentences without the possibility of parole.
The brothers' first trial, which took place in 1993, saw both Erik and Lyle testifying that they acted out of fear for their lives due to years of alleged sexual abuse by their parents. Prosecutors, however, contended that the motive behind the gruesome act was to gain access to their parents' $14 million fortune.
As the week progresses, the public eagerly awaits Gascón's decision, which could pave the way for a remarkable development in one of the most infamous family murder cases in American history.
