In a remarkable turn of events, a local cop in Pennsylvania who intervened to halt an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has been hailed as a hero by Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe. Sheriff Slupe staunchly defended the officer's actions, asserting that while the deranged gunman was not stopped from firing, the officer's brave and timely intervention ultimately saved the ex-president's life.
The incident occurred during a rally on Saturday, where Thomas Crooks, armed with an AR-style semi-automatic assault rifle, positioned himself on the rooftop of a nearby manufacturing plant, approximately 130 yards from the stage where Trump was addressing the crowd. As the officer, dispatched by the Secret Service to assist during the rally, climbed onto the roof to confront Crooks, the assailant noticed him and pointed the weapon directly at the officer.
Sheriff Slupe emphasized the critical moment, stating, "Can you imagine 10 seconds before that? That the president was looking straight ahead and where that bullet could have potentially landed." The officer's presence disrupted Crooks' nefarious plan, forcing him to momentarily divert his attention from Trump. Sensing the imminent danger, the officer hung from the edge of the roof, placing himself in harm's way in an attempt to eliminate the threat.
Despite his valiant efforts, the cop lost his grip and fell from the rooftop, unable to reach his own weapon. Seconds later, Crooks unleashed a hail of bullets, injuring Trump, taking the life of a rally attendee, and leaving two others wounded. Trump, however, credited his survival to the sudden movement he made to look at an immigration chart, coinciding with the commencement of the gunfire.
Sheriff Slupe defended the officer's actions, justifying that the encounter with the shooter delayed a potentially worse outcome. "If I'm interrupted and I move my gun, you are going to have to reassess that whole situation at this point, so yes, you can make a case that those two officers saved the president's life," he asserted.
On the heels of the failed assassination attempt, the Secret Service faced criticism for failing to secure the rooftop from where Crooks fired. The agency claimed that local police were responsible for securing the immediate rally area outside their perimeter. However, Sheriff Slupe, Butler County's top law enforcement official, pushed back against the blame, insisting the Secret Service should shoulder the responsibility.
Though Sheriff Slupe acknowledged that the incident revealed a failure on some level, he remained steadfast in defending his department's execution of their assigned duties. Even in the face of criticism, the sheriff revealed that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle reached out to commend their efforts and express gratitude for their service.
As investigations continue into the security breach and subsequent attack, the transcendence of the local officer's bravery in averting a potential tragedy has become a source of inspiration and gratitude not only within the local community but also on a national scale. The act of courage demonstrated by the officer serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance necessary in protecting public figures against potential threats.
