The latest D1Baseball Field of 64 Projections for the NCAA tournament has been released, revealing some changes in the rankings as another week concludes. While there haven't been any major shifts in the top five, there have been notable movements further down the list.
Securing their positions as top national seeds are Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Clemson. However, Tennessee has managed to jump two spots this week to claim the No. 4 ranking, surpassing Kentucky, which it recently defeated in a road series. North Carolina remains a consistent presence from last week's projections.
Joining the top eight seeds this week are East Carolina and Wake Forest. East Carolina has been dominating its league, boasting an impressive 32-8 overall record. With an RPI ranking of 8 and the 10th toughest strength of schedule in the nation, East Carolina is showing its strength. Meanwhile, Wake Forest has entered as a projection pick, taking two of three from Florida State on home turf. With an RPI of 11 and 10 victories against Quad 1 teams (tied for the second-most behind Kentucky), Wake Forest is trending upward.
Florida State continues to hold a high position in the rankings, sitting comfortably at No. 9. However, Oregon State has slipped to 13th in the RPI after being swept by California on the road. Oregon State now has only five wins against Quad 1 and Quad 2 teams combined.
Three teams, namely Virginia, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia, have dropped out of the Top 16 mix this week. Virginia's series loss to Georgia Tech lowered their RPI slightly, while Oklahoma State's loss to Kansas State dropped them down to 25 in the RPI. As for West Virginia, a sweep at the hands of Texas Tech saw them take a steep dip to 34 in the RPI.
Stepping in as new entrants in the Top 16 are Oklahoma, Coastal Carolina, and Arizona. Oklahoma currently leads the Big 12 by an impressive three-game margin and has climbed to 18th in the RPI. Coastal Carolina managed to secure a series win against Louisiana, propelling them to 15th in the RPI. Arizona, on the other hand, holds the lead in the Pac-12 regular season title race and although their RPI sits at 29, an improvement is expected in the coming days.
When it comes to conference representation, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads the way with a whopping 10 teams projected to make the tournament. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is close behind with nine teams, while the Big 12 boasts seven squads in the field. The Pac-12 has five representatives, the Sun Belt has four, and the Big Ten, Big West, Coastal Athletic, and Conference USA each have two teams included.
In the latest projections, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Texas, and Louisiana Tech claim the last four spots in the tournament, while Xavier, TCU, Creighton, and Ole Miss just missed out as the first four teams on the outside looking in.
