In a pre-draft press conference held on Monday, Las Vegas Raiders general manager Tom Telesco expressed the team's readiness to be "aggressive" if necessary, including the possibility of trading up to secure a top pick in the draft. Telesco also stated that the Raiders are prepared to keep their current pick at No. 13 or even trade down to a certain range in the first round, keeping all options on the table.

Unsurprisingly, Telesco's stance is one of flexibility and adaptability, as the Raiders strategically navigate the final stretch leading up to Thursday's first round, slated to begin at 5 p.m. PT. The team is open to exploring multiple scenarios and will monitor how the draft unfolds.

With potential interest in drafting a premier quarterback talent, Telesco acknowledged the team's willingness to explore a trade to acquire a top pick, although the process may not be easy. Consequently, the Raiders may consider keeping their No. 13 pick or even sliding down the first round to maximize their options.

Meanwhile, the New England Patriots have reportedly been taking calls from teams looking to move into the third spot in the draft. General Manager Eliot Wolf plays a central role in these discussions, while Patriots President Jonathan Kraft is heavily involved in decision-making.

Despite recent reports of a disagreement between Telesco and Raiders coach Antonio Pierce regarding the team's first-round strategy, Telesco praised Pierce's clear vision for the type of player he wants for the program. This alignment has facilitated the scouting process, making it easier for Telesco and his staff to identify players who would fit seamlessly with the team's direction.

Telesco emphasized that while there have been some preliminary discussions with other teams, it is not uncommon during the pre-draft period. He also noted that the emergence of the newly introduced Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) world may have affected the depth of the draft, with more players opting to stay in school longer. Telesco views this as a positive development, allowing athletes to further their education and refine their football skills before entering the NFL.

The primary objective for Telesco and the Raiders is to meticulously select eight players (subject to change) who they believe are the best fit for the team. Acknowledging that not all selections will meet expectations, Telesco emphasized that the draft is designed to lay the groundwork for the team's future success, with players expected to stay for at least four to five years.

Telesco expressed his admiration for the scouting department he inherited, highlighting the continuity in place and implying minimal changes after the draft. As the draft approaches, the focus remains on building a strong roster under Coach Antonio Pierce's guidance, with several Raiders players participating in offseason workouts at the team facility virtually.

Looking beyond the draft, Tom Telesco anticipates an aggressive approach to signing undrafted free agents, providing opportunities for several players to vie for a spot on the 53-man roster. The 2023 Raiders' draft class, including standout newcomers like pass-rusher Tyree Wilson and cornerback Jakorian Bennett, will undergo significant development this year.

Telesco's press conference began with a moment of remembrance for two esteemed sports journalists, the late John Clayton and Chris Mortensen, showcasing a heartfelt tribute to their contributions to the industry.

As Las Vegas prepares for the 2024 NFL Draft, the Raiders stand ready to explore various strategies to build a strong team for the upcoming season and beyond.
