**Las Vegas Raiders Coach Antonio Pierce Handed Eight-Year NCAA Show-Cause Order for Recruitment Violations**

Antonio Pierce, the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, has been handed an eight-year show-cause order by the NCAA due to serious recruitment violations during his tenure as an assistant coach at Arizona State University (ASU). The NCAA's ruling, announced on Thursday, revealed that most of these infractions stemmed from Pierce's efforts to bypass COVID-19 restrictions.

The violations, described as a "scheme" by the NCAA, involved illegal recruiting activities including unauthorized tryouts, football facility tours, and entertainment for 35 prospective athletes. Additionally, Pierce was found to have instructed a subordinate to tamper with a player from another institution and to have undertaken out-of-state trips to meet with prospects during a mandated recruiting dead period.

The NCAA report highlighted Pierce's central role in orchestrating these violations, prompting the severe penalty. Should Pierce obtain a position at any NCAA-affiliated school between now and October 2, 2032, he would be subject to a one-season suspension and banned from any contact with the program's coaches or players during that period.

During the investigation, Pierce provided false or misleading information and refused to share his financial records with the NCAA. Testimonies from ASU staff suggested that Pierce felt insulated from potential NCAA consequences due to his personal wealth. It was further revealed that he used his authoritative position to coerce staff members into compliance, often by invoking the fear of job loss.

Former ASU football analyst Anthony Garnett also faced repercussions, receiving a five-year show-cause order for his involvement in the violations. Garnett would also encounter a one-season suspension if hired by an NCAA school during his penalty period.

The scandal has had longstanding repercussions for ASU as well. In April, the NCAA imposed a series of penalties on the institution, including a four-year probation period, an undisclosed fine, nullification of games involving ineligible players, reduced scholarships, and additional recruiting restrictions.

Pierce, who began his ASU career in December 2017 and was promoted to associate head coach/co-defensive coordinator by February 2020, resigned from the university in 2022 amid the fallout. Following his resignation, he joined the Raiders as a linebackers coach and ascended to the interim head coach position in October 2023, before being officially named head coach in January.

Herm Edwards, the ASU head coach who hired Pierce, was fired after a disappointing start to the 2022 season. Edwards himself was found responsible for a "responsibility violation" associated with the infractions. His career in football continues with his current role at ESPN.
