**Kinzinger Commends Rubio's Potential Nomination as Secretary of State**
Former Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), a well-known critic of President-elect Trump, has expressed support for the possible nomination of Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) as the next Secretary of State. Kinzinger's remarks came during his appearance on CNN's "The Source."
"Marco Rubio has been demonstrating notable changes in his positions. I was quite surprised to learn that he even voted against Ukraine aid," Kinzinger mentioned to host Kaitlan Collins. "He's by no means a neoconservative, which is likely significant for Trump, but he certainly has a good grasp of foreign policy. That expertise is going to be crucial."
Kinzinger, who was one of the Republicans that voted to impeach Trump during his first term, emphasized his approval of Rubio's nomination compared to other candidates who lacked foreign policy experience. He commented, "Considering some of the other names that were being discussed, Rubio's experience makes him a solid choice."
The news about President-elect Trump’s possible appointments for key cabinet positions broke shortly before Kinzinger’s interview. Rubio has a reputation for being assertive on foreign policy matters, especially regarding Iran and China. Despite his commendation, Kinzinger admitted uncertainty about how Rubio's appointment would shape the foreign policy direction of Trump's incoming administration. He noted, "It ultimately depends on what Donald Trump demands, as Rubio has shown a willingness to adapt."
Addressing the issue of Russia and Ukraine, Kinzinger referenced Trump's bold claims of resolving the conflict swiftly. He urged a cautious approach to any potential deals with Russia, stressing the importance of safeguarding Ukraine's ability to defend itself. "If there’s a deal to be made, it needs to ensure Ukraine's future defense capabilities," he stated.
Kinzinger also anticipated that the new administration under Trump would likely ease constraints on Israel and adopt a tougher stance against Iran. "Given the complicated nature of the Israel situation, I believe we will see fewer restrictions on Israel's actions and a more aggressive posture towards Iran," he predicted.
In the wake of Trump's victory over Vice President Harris, several key national security positions have been rapidly filled. Representative Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) has been chosen as ambassador to the United Nations, and Representative Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) will serve as national security adviser. Additionally, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (R) is being considered for the role of Secretary of Homeland Security.
Rubio's move from the Senate to the Secretary of State's office would mean a reduction in the Republican majority in the Senate. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) will be responsible for appointing a replacement to fill Rubio's seat.
