In a significant step towards protecting LGBTQ youth, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear signed an executive order on Wednesday, officially banning conversion therapy in the state. The signing ceremony took place at 10 a.m. in the Capitol rotunda, where Governor Beshear was joined by representatives from the Kentucky Mental Health Coalition, the Fairness Campaign, Kentucky Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers.

Addressing the audience just before signing the order, Governor Beshear emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being of all individuals in Kentucky. He stated, "Today, we're making sure that individuals, Kentucky citizens, are not subjected to a so-called therapy that we know causes extensive harm. We can't reach our full potential unless everyone is supported to be their true selves. And so from your governor and from your executive branch, we see you. We care about you."

Conversion therapy is a controversial practice that aims to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQ youth. The American Medical Association has strongly advocated for a federal ban on this harmful practice. With the signing of the executive order, Kentucky becomes the latest state to join the growing movement against conversion therapy, along with more than 20 other states including New York, California, and neighboring Illinois, as reported by the Movement Advancement Project.

The ban on conversion therapy was already in effect in several cities within Kentucky. In 2020, the Metro Council passed an ordinance in Louisville, making it illegal for any licensed provider to engage in conversion therapy. Notably, Louisville was the second city in Kentucky to take this decisive action, following in the footsteps of Covington. Conversion therapy is also prohibited in Lexington.

While there have been ongoing efforts within Kentucky's legislature to implement a statewide ban on conversion therapy, no bill has passed to date. However, the signing of the executive order by Governor Beshear marks a significant milestone in protecting vulnerable LGBTQ youth from this harmful practice.

It is worth noting that Kentucky's neighboring state, Indiana, has a law in place that prohibits local-level bans on conversion therapy, making Kentucky's action to ban the practice even more noteworthy.

The executive order signed by Governor Beshear sends a clear message that the state of Kentucky prioritizes the well-being and rights of its LGBTQ community. By taking this vital step towards inclusivity and equality, the state is ensuring that all individuals can thrive and be true to themselves without fear of enduring harmful conversion therapy.

The ban on conversion therapy in Kentucky is a significant stride towards a more accepting and supportive society, providing hope and protection for LGBTQ youth across the state.
