In an announcement made on Friday, the White House confirmed that President Joe Biden will be hosting a visit from the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on May 31. This will mark the team's second consecutive visit to the presidential residence, following their back-to-back Super Bowl wins.
The Chiefs had an eventful season, gaining attention not only for their football prowess but also for the high-profile relationship between pop superstar Taylor Swift and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, which was made public earlier in the season. However, it appears that Swift will not be in attendance at the White House visit. The artist is currently on tour in Europe as part of her record-breaking "Eras Tour" and has performances scheduled in Madrid and Lyon around the time of the visit.
Last year's visit to the White House was described as "surreal" by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who expressed his excitement about experiencing the history and iconic landmarks of Washington, DC. Mahomes had never been to the nation's capital before and found the experience truly memorable.
However, this year's visit might carry some underlying tension due to comments made by Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker during a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a small Catholic school in Atchison, Kansas. Butker criticized President Biden and other unnamed Catholic leaders for advocating what he considered to be "dangerous gender ideologies" related to transgender rights. His remarks sparked criticism, particularly for diminishing the value of academic and professional achievements of women in favor of prioritizing marriage and motherhood.
When asked about Butker's potential attendance at the White House visit, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed confidence regarding his participation. However, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on the matter during a recent press briefing, maintaining that the invitation is extended to the entire team and the decision to attend lies with the team members.
Despite Butker's controversial comments, Mahomes came to his defense, recently stating that he judges him based on his character and actions rather than his remarks. Coach Reid echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the Chiefs team is a diverse group that respects each other's opinions, even if they do not necessarily agree with them.
The upcoming visit to the White House presents an opportunity for the Kansas City Chiefs to celebrate their remarkable achievements and be recognized for their consecutive Super Bowl victories. It remains to be seen who from the team will attend the event, while fans and Swift enthusiasts will have to wait for another opportunity to witness the connection between the pop sensation and Chiefs star tight end.
