In a historic milestone, Vice President Kamala Harris has officially earned the nomination of the Democratic Party for the upcoming presidential election. Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison made the announcement during a campaign update video call on Friday. With enough delegate votes in a virtual roll call, Harris is poised to become the first woman to serve as president if she wins the general election in November.

Since Thursday morning, convention delegates have been participating in a virtual roll call conducted via email or phone, organized by the Democratic National Committee. The voting period will continue until Monday evening, but Harrison confirmed that Harris has already garnered a majority of votes from all convention delegates.

Expressing her gratitude, Harris joined the call and emphasized that she would officially accept her nomination after the voting period is closed. "I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States," Harris stated. "As your future president, I know we are up to this fight, and when we fight, everyone will say, we win."

This swift rise to being the party's nominee comes just 12 days after President Joe Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the re-election campaign. Biden promptly endorsed Harris as his successor, garnering support from Democratic donors and elected officials in a show of unity.

Harris's nomination reflects a significant moment in American politics, as she is currently the first woman, Black person, and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. If elected, she would make history as the first woman president in the United States.

Notably, Harris emerged as the sole qualified candidate following a process outlined by the Democratic Party's Rules Committee. She was the only individual to launch a campaign to succeed Biden and secured enough delegate signatures to progress to the virtual roll call.

The decision to hold a virtual roll call was initially made by the DNC in May due to uncertainties surrounding ballot deadlines in Ohio. Although the issue was eventually resolved by the state legislature, the Democratic Party argued that Ohio's Republican lawmakers were acting in bad faith and that early nomination would help avoid potential legal complications. Ohio leaders have refuted these allegations.

The virtual roll call provides an innovative and inclusive approach to selecting the Democratic Party's nominee amid the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic. As the nomination moves forward, Harris's supporters and the party are gearing up for the upcoming general election, prepared to rally behind their historic candidate.

As the nation eagerly awaits the final results of the virtual roll call, all eyes are on Kamala Harris, who is poised to make lasting strides in American history if she secures victory in November's election.
