### Kamala Harris Takes Lead Over Donald Trump in Surprising Iowa Poll Shift
In a dramatic turn of events, Vice President Kamala Harris has surged ahead of former President Donald Trump in Iowa, according to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll. Just days before a pivotal election, Harris leads with 47% of the vote to Trump's 44%, a stunning shift in a state Trump previously won by significant margins in 2016 and 2020.
This newfound support for Harris is largely driven by women, particularly older and politically independent voters. The poll reveals that while Trump continues to hold strong among his core base—including men, evangelicals, and rural residents—Harris is making significant inroads among demographics that could prove crucial for electoral success. Independent women, in particular, show strong support for Harris, favoring her by a 28-point margin over Trump.
Older voters also appear to be shifting toward Harris, with senior women backing her by more than a 2-to-1 ratio. This marks a departure from trends in earlier polls, where Trump consistently led among independents and seniors. Moreover, Harris gains traction among those with college degrees and urban residents, contrasting with Trump's stronger appeal among those without college degrees and rural inhabitants.
Despite the shift, Trump maintains a more enthusiastic voter base, with 76% of his supporters describing themselves as extremely or very enthusiastic about their choice. Comparatively, 71% of Harris' supporters express the same level of enthusiasm, a decrease from 80% in September.
The poll, conducted from October 28-31, surveyed 808 likely Iowa voters and has a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points. This poll follows previous ones showing a significant lead for Trump, including a September poll where he was ahead by 4 points and a June poll that had him leading Democratic President Joe Biden by 18 points. The rapid shift underscores the dynamic and unpredictable nature of voter sentiments as Election Day approaches.
Independent voters, who play a crucial role in swinging elections, now favor Harris 46% to 39%. This shift is particularly noticeable among independent women, who dramatically increased their support for Harris since September. Meanwhile, independent men continue to favor Trump, though by a smaller margin.
As the election nears, the focus remains on key battleground states. Surprisingly, neither Harris nor Trump has recently campaigned in Iowa, perhaps underestimating the state's potential impact. Yet, with 91% of likely voters having made up their minds—96% of whom are firm Harris supporters and 95% committed to Trump—the final push in these last days will be crucial in determining the outcome.
