In a resolute attempt to bolster her pro-labor stance, Kamala Harris addressed the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) convention in Houston, Texas. The event marked her first speech to a major labor union since announcing her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Harris wasted no time in criticizing Donald Trump and his "extreme allies" for their alleged efforts to revert to failed trickle-down economic policies and union-busting strategies. She condemned Project 2025, a right-wing think tank's proposal for a future Trump administration, as a blueprint that could potentially plunge America back into a dark past.

During her address, Harris passionately advocated for a future where unions are strong, emphasizing that a robust labor movement is vital for a strong America. She received thunderous applause when she expressed her gratitude to educators for their public service, acknowledging the influence and impact teachers had on her journey to becoming the vice-president and now running for president.

Highlighting her commitment to a vision of progress, Harris emphasized her belief in equal opportunities for all individuals to not just get by, but to thrive. She emphasized the importance of eliminating child poverty, ensuring dignified retirement for seniors, and protecting workers' freedom to join unions.

Harris pledged her support for the Pro Act, a legislation aimed at modernizing US labor laws that has faced Republican opposition. She promised that, alongside President Joe Biden, they would work towards enacting this legislation to provide workers with a stronger voice to protect their rights.

Stressing her unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community, Harris underscored the challenges faced by educators in the face of conservative-backed "don't say gay" legislation at the state level. She reaffirmed her commitment to freedom, compassion, and the rule of law, asking the audience a poignant question: "What kind of country do we want to live in? A country of chaos, fear, and hate or a country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law?"

Ahead of Harris's speech, the AFT president, Randi Weingarten, urged the union's 1.7 million members to rally behind Harris, highlighting her leadership in the fight for various freedoms, including the freedom to join a union.

Support for Harris from major labor unions has been escalating rapidly since Joe Biden endorsed her as his successor. The AFL-CIO, the largest federation of labor unions in the US, announced their endorsement of Harris, stating that together they aim to build on the powerful legacy of the Biden-Harris administration in creating good union jobs and fostering economic prosperity.

With her dedication to labor unions and her sharp critique of Trump's economic policies, Kamala Harris's presidential bid has gained strong support from the labor community. As the race continues, her commitment to elevating workers' rights and fostering an inclusive economy remains a central focus of her campaign.
