In an unexpected turn of events, Vice President Kamala Harris generated a significant amount of support during her campaign visit to The Villages in Florida on Saturday, a stronghold for Republicans and former President Donald Trump. Videos of Harris's rally, showcasing crowds of golf carts decorated with American flags, have gone viral on social media platforms.

The Villages, a sprawling retirement community in central Florida, has traditionally favored Republican candidates, including Trump, who claimed victory in the state during both the 2016 and 2020 elections. However, the presence of hundreds of golf carts filled with enthusiastic Harris supporters has caught the attention of Democratic candidate Barbie Harden Hall, who captured the scenes and shared them on X (formerly Twitter).

Hall's videos, which highlight the impressive turnout and energized atmosphere, drew widespread attention, with several Harris supporters resharing them. One video reposted by Democratic fundraiser Jon Cooper garnered over 5 million views, highlighting the significance of this show of support in a community typically associated with conservative ideals.

Describing The Villages as a "SUPER-RED community" known for its strong Trump support, Cooper expressed his astonishment at the massive turnout for Kamala Harris, emphasizing that such an occurrence is unprecedented. Hall's video alone has been viewed over 41,000 times, and a similar video posted on the account @Harris_wins reached over 3.6 million views.

Newsweek reached out to Harris's campaign to verify the details of the rally, indicating the desire to confirm the remarkable display of support in a typically Republican stronghold. However, no response has been received as of yet.

Jaime Harrison, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, commented on the remarkable energy and enthusiasm witnessed during the event. Speaking on MSNBC's The Weekend, Harrison highlighted the participation of senior citizens, stating that there were 500 golf cart seniors who had likely supported Trump in the past but were now backing Kamala Harris. Harrison described the atmosphere as reminiscent of the grassroots energy witnessed during Barack Obama's campaign in 2008.

The Florida Democratic Party expressed its support for Harris's campaign visit and emphasized her ability to energize the entire Democratic base within the past week. According to a press release from the party, nearly 10,000 new volunteers from traditionally conservative places like The Villages have stepped up to fight against the Republican Party and its candidates, including Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.

Limited polling data is available for a potential match-up between Harris and Trump in Florida, given that President Joe Biden only withdrew from the race a week ago. However, a recent Redfield & Wilton Strategies poll conducted across nine states, including swing states, showed that Trump holds an additional 8 percentage point lead over Harris in Florida compared to his lead over Biden. The poll surveyed 6,927 voters, with specific numbers from Florida not specified.

Harris's unexpected show of support in a Republican stronghold like The Villages has stirred curiosity and garnered attention as she continues her "Weekend of Action" campaign. As the election season progresses, it remains to be seen how this unexpected surge in support will impact the political landscape of Florida.
