In a federal criminal trial that has garnered significant attention, the jury has started deliberations in the case of Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, who is facing gun charges. The prosecution presented what they described as "overwhelming" evidence against Hunter Biden, accusing him of lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that Hunter Biden possessed a Colt Cobra revolver in 2018 while using narcotics, which is a violation of federal law. Prosecutor Leo Wise emphasized that there was an abundance of evidence indicating Hunter Biden's drug addiction at the time, including testimonies from his ex-wife and former romantic partners, as well as text messages and excerpts from his memoir.
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell, however, urged the jury to find his client not guilty, claiming that the prosecution's evidence was mere speculation and conjecture. Lowell argued that Hunter Biden did not knowingly mislead anyone on the federal gun form, as he did not consider himself a drug addict or user during the period in question.
The trial concluded with closing arguments, during which Wise countered Lowell's claims and asserted that Hunter Biden was fully aware of his drug use. Wise highlighted the defendant's text messages discussing drug purchases and admissions in his memoir as proof. He made it clear that the evidence presented should be the focus, rather than the presence of Biden family members, including First Lady Jill Biden, in the courtroom.
After the defense rested its case without calling Hunter Biden to the stand, the jury began deliberations, taking into account the instructions given to them by U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika. The trial, which began on June 3, has been closely watched, coinciding with former President Donald Trump's conviction in a separate case of falsifying business records.
The outcome of this trial will have significant implications for Hunter Biden, as he faces three felony counts related to the possession of a firearm while using narcotics. The jury will carefully consider the evidence presented to determine whether Hunter Biden knowingly misled authorities about his drug use during the gun purchase.
As the jury deliberates, the public awaits a verdict that will shed light on this high-profile case involving a member of the Biden family.
