Emmy-winning actress and star of the hit TV show "Veep," Julia Louis-Dreyfus, has pledged her support for Kamala Harris' presidential run, promising to be "extra-involved" in the campaign. Louis-Dreyfus teased a possible appearance at the upcoming Democratic National Convention, where Harris is expected to accept the party's nomination.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Louis-Dreyfus discussed the advice her character, Selina Meyer from "Veep," would give to Harris. However, she jokingly cautioned the vice president against following Selina's suggestions, praising Harris' intelligence and stating that she wouldn't expect her to take the call.
Louis-Dreyfus recently recorded an advertisement aimed at informing Americans overseas about the process of casting their ballots. The political satire show "Veep" gained renewed attention when President Biden endorsed Harris as his successor, resembling a fictional storyline from the series.
Critics have drawn comparisons between Harris and Louis-Dreyfus' character, who is simultaneously portrayed as incompetent and vicious. However, Louis-Dreyfus dismissed such comparisons as rooted in sexism, noting that female candidates often face more scrutiny.
Speaking about her conversation with Harris at a state dinner in 2022, Louis-Dreyfus highlighted their discussion on the accuracy of "Veep" in portraying the culture of Washington, both behind and in front of the curtain. The actress, also known for her role as Elaine Benes in "Seinfeld," shared that Harris was a fan of the show.
Louis-Dreyfus emphasized that Selina Meyer was not modeled after Harris, and the show concluded in 2019, prior to Harris becoming the vice president. She praised Harris' ascent to the VP position, expressing that the Trump presidency had already surpassed any satire they could create.
Meanwhile, Harris is actively considering her choice for vice president. Reports indicate that she met with several top contenders, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona. Harris is expected to announce her VP pick shortly and campaign alongside them in Philadelphia.
Having secured the necessary delegates, Harris is scheduled to formally accept the Democratic Party's nomination at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has hinted that she may also make an appearance at the convention, further solidifying her support for Harris' campaign.
As the campaign intensifies, Harris continues to navigate the complex process of choosing her running mate, with time constraints due to her unexpected elevation to the presidential ticket. With Louis-Dreyfus on board and the convention on the horizon, Harris aims to solidify her position as a strong contender in the race for the White House.
