### Judge Denies New Trial and Release for 'Rust' Armorer in Fatal Shooting Case
Days after a hearing regarding whether "Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed could secure a new trial or dismissal from a New Mexico state prison, a judge has denied her requests. Gutierrez-Reed had been seeking release following her conviction for involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021.
The case caught renewed attention when bullets were handed over to the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office by Troy Teske, a former Arizona cop and close friend of Gutierrez-Reed's father. This evidence had not been seen by Alec Baldwin's lawyers. The concealed bullets led Judge Sommer to dismiss Baldwin’s charges, raising the possibility of Gutierrez-Reed’s release.
However, the judge's recent decision means Gutierrez-Reed will not be freed, nor will she receive a new trial. Her lawyer, Jason Bowles, announced intentions to appeal both decisions. In April, Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in New Mexico state prison after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the presence of a live round on the "Rust" film set.
The incident, which occurred on October 21, 2021, resulted in the death of Hutchins and the injury of the film's director, Joel Souza. The accident happened during a rehearsal at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe. Alec Baldwin, who had been handling the Colt .45 revolver, maintained that he did not pull the trigger and that the gun fired accidentally. However, his assertion was contradicted by the FBI, an independent analysis, and the firearm's manufacturer.
Baldwin's case was dismissed on the fourth day of the trial due to suppressed evidence, suggesting potential new avenues for Gutierrez-Reed. Baldwin continues to face nearly a dozen civil suits related to the "Rust" tragedy despite the dismissal of his criminal charges.
