**Boston Bruins Announce Coaching Change: Jim Montgomery Dismissed, Joe Sacco Steps In as Interim Coach**
In a significant shift for the Boston Bruins, General Manager Don Sweeney revealed on November 19 that Jim Montgomery has been relieved of his position as Head Coach. Montgomery, who had been with the team since July 1, 2022, will be replaced by Associate Coach Joe Sacco on an interim basis.
Montgomery's tenure with the Bruins was notable for a number of accomplishments, including leading the team to a record-breaking season. However, Sweeney expressed concern over the team's inconsistency and performance in the first 20 games of the 2024-25 season, citing it as the primary reason for the coaching change. In his statement, Sweeney praised Montgomery’s contributions and dedication, but emphasized the need for a shift to meet the high standards expected by the Bruins' fan base.
Sweeney said, "Our team's inconsistency and performance in the first 20 games of the 2024-25 season has been concerning and below how the Bruins want to reward our fans. I believe Joe Sacco has the coaching experience to bring the players and the team back to focusing on the consistent effort the NHL requires to have success."
President Cam Neely echoed Sweeney's sentiments, acknowledging Montgomery's positive impact on the organization and his remarkable 65-win season in 2022-23. Neely expressed confidence in Sacco's ability to navigate the team forward, highlighting his deep understanding of the franchise's standards and expectations.
Joe Sacco brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Sacco is in his 11th season with the Bruins, having served as Associate Coach most recently and Assistant Coach from 2014-24. His extensive coaching resume includes a stint as Head Coach for the Colorado Avalanche from 2009-13, where he was named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award in 2010. Sacco's prior coaching experience also spans several positions in the American Hockey League.
As the Bruins adjust to this significant change, both the management and fans will be watching closely to see how the team adapts and strives to meet the high expectations set for the season.
